What Are The Differences Between “USDA Organic” and Other Labels?

…a lot!

We get it. Shopping for your newborn can feel like information overload. Aisles are filled with baby formulas, supplements, and topicals covered in reassuring phrases like “All-Natural” or “Hypoallergenic.” But when choosing products for your baby’s tiny, developing body, it’s fair to ask: what do those words actually mean?

Unfortunately, not much.

Labels Without Certifications

Many of the phrases you’ll commonly see on baby products are not regulated at all. A product marked as “all-natural” can still contain high-fructose corn-syrup, pesticides, or other synthetic ingredients. A “gluten-free” claim does not automatically mean the product is safe from cross-contamination. And while “gentle” may sound comforting, it has no formal definition. This means a so-called “gentle” product may still include synthetics and preservatives that can irritate your baby’s sensitive skin or tummy.

Most labels do not require backing from reputable, independent studies or third-party oversight. Though the words may sound nice, they often tell parents very little about what is actually in the product or how it was made. With this in mind, if you find yourself unsure about a product's claims, take a look at the ingredient label itself. If there are words you do not understand or cannot easily pronounce, it is worth pausing and doing a bit more research. Or, opt for a product that clearly explains its ingredients and how they’re sourced.

What Does Certified “USDA Organic” Mean?

When a baby product is labeled “USDA Organic,” it has met clearly defined standards set by the United States Department of Agriculture for how it’s grown, processed, handled, and certified.[1] For parents, this helps remove a lot of the guesswork and provides confidence about what you’re giving your little one.

Here is what the certification involves:

  • Certified Oversight: Farms and processors must be certified by a USDA-accredited certifying agent. This includes regular inspections, detailed record keeping, and strict compliance with organic standards such as avoiding prohibited synthetics, GMOs, and certain processing aids.[2]

  • Clear Labeling Categories: Transparency is part of the standard. “100 percent organic” means all ingredients and processing aids are certified organic. “Organic” means at least 95% of the ingredients are certified organic. “Made with organic” means at least 70% of the ingredients are certified organic.[3]

  • Seal Usage: Only products that meet the “100 percent organic” or “organic” standards are allowed to display the USDA Organic seal.[4]

  • Enforcement and Traceability: Certification includes ongoing compliance, inspections, traceability, and enforcement, meaning companies are held accountable to maintain their standards.[5]

What Does This Mean For Companies Committed to USDA Organic Certification?

For brands that truly commit to USDA Organic standards, certification goes far beyond ingredient sourcing.[6] Making USDA Organic claims means the entire supply chain, from the ingredients, processing, packaging, labeling, and facilities, meet strict standards. This level of commitment is why Wellements baby products stand out.

Wellements prioritizes USDA Organic certification and third-party testing to help ensure every product is made with clean, thoughtfully sourced ingredients parents can trust. Wellements products are designed with your baby’s delicate system in mind. You can double check for yourself; the ingredients in staples such as the Organic Gripe Water or Multivitamin Drops are as simple as you’d expect.

Labels matter. When it comes to your little one, understanding which labels to trust and which to question matters even more. As parents, we’re all doing our best to make thoughtful choices during a time when every decision feels important. Choosing products backed by transparent standards and independent oversight can help simplify decisions and offer peace of mind. Wellements understands that when it comes to caring for your little one, higher standards and quality are worth prioritizing.
